Fishing Fort Lauderdale on Happy Day Today with Capt. Zsak

Eric Belanger from Canada and his grandmother, Pauline Lacroix, from Fort Lauderdale FL chartered the Happy Day Today along with the Topshotfishing team to do some fishing Fort Lauderdale FL. We had winds out of the east 12-18 mph, 4-6 ft. seas and blue skies with a brisk breeze.

Being close to the inlet, 15 minutes after leaving the dock, lines were in the water at 200 ft. of water. We had two kites out, with two live Goggle Eyes from each kite. Eric was telling fish stories of the Pike and Bass that he has hanging in his trophy room, along with his Moose head. Today we were looking for a Sailfish. Our first fish to appear was a Sailfish. This one swam around the bait, not interested in feeding; Jackson, our mate, raised and lowered the live bait, to make it splash and entice the Sailfish, but no luck. Sailfish are like any other live creaturse – if they are not hungry, they do not feed. By observing the way a fish swims towards the bait, sometimes you can determine whether it will feed or not.

Forty-five minutes later another Sailfish appeared on the left short. This Sailfish too swam up to the bait very slowly, and Jackson repeatedly splashed the bait. The color of the Sailfish changed to amber-brown, which indicates one thing – he is getting mad and he attacked the bait. All Billfish kill for a living – if you aggravate a Billfish enough, he will attack, whether he is hungry or not. As the Sailfish attacked the bait, he got hooked in the bill. The Sailfish came flying out of the water and screamed the line off the Shimano TLD 25. With experience on Eric’s side, the battle was on, as his grandmother started taking pictures. By the time we cleared all lines, ¾ of the line was off the real. I backed down the boat to retrieve some line, and Eric did a great job bringing in the Sailfish in the rough seas. Pictures were taken of the 92” Sailfish.

It was time to head back to the dock at Bahia Mar 801 Seabreeze Blvd. Fort Lauderdale 33316.
